Landplan is assisting Alaiedon Township encourage the preservation of its dominant agricultural and rural character while providing opportunities for growth and development.
Alaiedon Township is located southeast of Lansing in south central Michigan. The majority of the township is devoted to farming except along its northern periphery, which abuts some of the more urbanized areas of Meridian Charter Township. I-96 also travels along its northern periphery and includes the Okemos Road interchange which facilitates travel north into Meridian Charter Township and south to the abutting county seat of Mason.
Landplan assisted the township with the development of a Master Plan to, in part, encourage the preservation of its farming industry and coordinate growth with public services and infrastructure. Landplan recently completed assisting the township with the preparation of a new zoning ordinance, including the incorporation of an innovative transfer of development rights component to provide another tool for farmland and natural resources preservation and growth management.
Landplan is assisting Gerrish Township preserve its rich natural resources and “up north” character, as a residential and recreation-based community along the shores of Higgins Lake.
Gerrish Township is located in the northwest quarter of Roscommon County in the upper central region of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, and encompasses more than half of the Higgins Lake shoreline. The Higgins and Houghton Lakes area is one of Michigan’s most popular water-based recreation and tourism areas. The lake and the abundant state forest lands are defining features of the township and contribute to the “up-north” and recreation-based residential character of the community.
Landplan assisted Gerrish Township with the development of a Master Plan to address future growth and the preservation of the township’s unique resource-rich and “up-north” character. Landplan is now assisting the township with the preparation of a wholly new zoning ordinance to implement the Master Plan and improve day-to-day zoning administration.
Landplan is working with the Calhoun Conservation District to improve the protection of surface waters and other natural resources important to the environmental integrity of both the Battle Creek River and Rice Creek Watersheds and the state as a whole.
Through the support of a federal grant from the Environmental Protection Agency, Landplan and the Calhoun Conservation District (CCD) is providing land use planning assistance to townships in the Rice Creek and Battle Creek River watersheds. The scope of the program includes assigning an experienced land use consultant to townships that express a willingness to actively work with and support the efforts of the CCD as part of the Battle Creek River and Rice Creek Watersheds Implementation Project. The project aims to protect and conserve surface waters and other natural resources within the two watersheds. Landplan was selected to assist the CCD in this endeavor.
Landplan is evaluating local community Master Plans and Zoning Ordinances to identify deficiencies pertaining to natural resource protection, meeting with community officials to discuss optional tools for addressing the identified deficiencies including updates to their Master Plan and Zoning Ordinance, and working with local officials to correct the deficiencies.
